So we feed Tepig 10 Protein, and all of a sudden we only have to give EVs via battling, knocking off from the original Patrat we had to battle. But there's more! Power Items. There are a number of items in the game you can let your Pokemon hold that increase the amount of EVs they gain from battles.
Their effects and location are outlined here. Because we want to train our Tepig in the attack stat, lets give it a Power Bracer to hold. All of a sudden that daunting figure of Patrat has gone down to just a fraction over 30!
On Driftveil Drawbridge and Marvellous Bridge, occasionally you'll see shadows on the ground. These items are as follows. Unlike the Vitamin items mentioned above, there is no limit to the number of wings you can use on your Pokemon to increase its EVs.
The only downside is that they are somewhat time consuming to get hold of in any significant amount. There is also a seventh type of Wing - the Pretty Wing - which can only be sold and has no other value. It's an extremely rare virus your Pokemon can catch from battling with wild Pokemon, and if you are lucky enough to get it you'll soon find that it is absolutely wonderful for EV training your Pokemon. Pokemon Centre nurses will stop you the next time you go in to heal your Pokemon and tell you about the virus.
Lets look at our Tepig once more. Tepig has been fed 10 Protein, meaning she already has Attack EVs in the bank. Finally lets say we got lucky and have infected Tepig with the virus. With Black and White the way in which EVs are calculated has been changed. This is no longer the case; they are now calculated after each battle. What this means is that it is now possible for you to EV train a level Pokemon, if you so choose.
We also have the ability to reset EVs if we need to. This is done through using the following Berries. They're listed here as providing a decrease of 10, however, in Generation IV, the first berry you use will reset the EVs for the stat it effects to This means in order to completely reset a stat we need to use 11 of the specific berry. In Generation V though, you'll need 26 of the berries to completely remove a stat from maximum. Sadly, Black and White have brought with them no way of obtaining these berries aside from through the Dream World.
The berries will be available through the dream world, but will likely be more time consuming to get hold of than they were in previous generations of the games. This mini-game, accessible from the very beginning, has you play through various mini-games, each focused upon a certain stat. If you manage to sufficiently complete the mini-game, you will get a boost of Effort Values in that specific stat.
Level 1 games add 4 Points, Level 2 games add 8 points and Level 3 games add 12 points. You get given these bags depending on your score in each of the mini-game. Battles provide a new way to get Effort Values. This makes it easier to boost your stats. If you're facing a Caterpie, which gives 1 Hit Point EP as standard, when it calls for help, this is doubled. These are done through items in various shops, which differ depending on the players you interacted with to make the shop.
Each specific item can be use once a day. Rare Candies are absolutely fine to use after you have finished EV training your Pokemon. Pokemon do not lose stats if they are levelled with a Rare Candy so long as they have sufficient EVs. Everything should be completely covered here, however if there is anything else you need to know don't hesitate to ask in our chat room or forums.
Finally, below is a list of all the best EV training areas in the game. However, players must pass through a gate to the next area before the Trainer can be battled again. If the player fails to pass through a gate that connects the two areas, all Trainers that have been battled in the previous area will not be available for rematch.
In addition, it can also be troublesome if the Trainer in question is far away from the gates or a large area of wild encounters is blocking the player's path. Another way for players to rematch Trainers is by leaving the game itself and rejoining. However, it can also be somewhat tedious, as the player has to keep restarting the game after saving and leaving in order to battle Trainers again, and reloading the games is rather time-consuming.
On the upside, once the player restarts the game again, they will always respawn back where the player saved. The final way for players to rematch Trainers is by using the Player Search function in the Recreational Teleportation Device. The Player Search is the most efficient way for players to keep battling Trainers for EV Training, as the player can simultaneously save the game and be able to rematch Trainers again and again. All the player needs to do is open the RTD, choose "Player Search" and click the "Join" button next to the player's friends who are listed as in "Adventure" mode.
Entering any name that is on the server with them and clicking "Join", as well as accessing either Battle Colosseum or Trade Resort then returning to Adventure Mode also works. Players can even search for their own name and click "Join" and it still would function normally. This game provides some ideal places or trainers for gaining specific EVs efficiently.
