Near the end of the day, a Mahael-uret or skindancer possessing a mercenary attacked the inn. He killed Shep before Bast managed to stop him and Aaron killed him. Later that night, Bast snuck into Chronicler's room. He told him that it was he who brought Chronicler to the inn and ordered him to use the story to make Kvothe remember that he was a hero. When Chronicler tried to refuse, Bast threatened to kill him if he didn't compy. Bast and Chronicle continued to listen to the story.
However, when Kvothe mentioned that he listened to the Cthaeh , Bast became furious and told them that the Cthaeh is the most evil being in existence and anyone who hears him causes great disaster. At some point, Bast left and several thugs went into the inn and assaulted Kvothe. When Bast returned, he saw that Kvothe had a tooth knocked out, so he used magic to switch his tooth for Kvothe's. Later that night, Bast and Chronicler argue about whether or not the Cthaeh is a true threat. Chronicler pointed out that if the Cthaeh manipulates you no matter what you do, you may as well do what you want.
Bast agrees, thinking that this way of thinking supports his plans. Bast then snuck out of the inn to meet with the thugs who attacked Kvothe. It is revealed that he hired them to attack him, hoping that it Kvothe would heroically defeat them. Bast used magic on their campfire so it would kill them. Chandrian Cinder Haliax. He is over years old and a noble of the Faen Courts. Bast and Kvothe have a seemingly close relationship, the origins of which are not yet known. Bast alludes to having an overreaching plan to restore Kvothe's power by making him remember his past and all of the things he has accomplished. The character Chronicler becomes entangled in this plan due to Bast who later reveals that he purposely leaked the location of Kvothe in hopes of attracting attention.
Bast claims to care for Kvothe very much, often referring to him by the name "Reshi," which from contextual clues seems to refer to his position as Bast's mentor. He seems to have a sort of reverence toward Kvothe and his abilities, listening attentively to the narration of his story and also encouraging him to excel. Bast's alignment is very ambiguous throughout the series. He is often described as graceful and displays a lascivious demeanor.
Conversely, he often privately displays a darker side of himself in many scenes with Chronicler and in his final scene of The Wise Man's Fear. Bast also appears as the focal character in the short story The Lightning Tree which was published in the Rogues anthology.
In this story we learn that Bast conducts a sort of business making deals and trades with the children of Newarre.
